About the Hanuman Chalisa
The Hanuman Chalisa is a devotional hymn written by Goswami Tulsidas in the 16th century in praise of Lord Hanuman, the devoted servant of Lord Rama in the Ramayana. “Chalisa” comes from the Hindi word “chalis”, meaning forty, for its forty verses (chaupais). Its simple, rhythmic lines make it one of the most widely recited Hindu prayers, especially on Tuesdays and Saturdays and on Hanuman Jayanti.
Lord Hanuman, also called Anjaneya, Maruti, Bajrang Bali and Pavanputra, is worshipped for his strength, courage, wisdom and devotion to Lord Rama. The Chalisa describes these qualities and many of his names.
